At what age should your child be independent in toileting?

Toilet training is essential for your child to use the toilet properly and eventually- independently.

However, the question is, at what age should you expect your child to be able to use the toilet without any assistance?

On average, children are expected to be able to use the toilet completely independent at around 6 years old. You shouldn’t expect your child to be completely independent in all aspect of toileting below that age. However, some children may have reached complete independence in toileting earlier than others.

If your child is well beyond 6 years old but still needs assistance in toileting, you should figure out what causes this issue.

If it is related to a lack of toileting skills, then you should focus on that specific skill and try to improve it.

The good thing about lacking any ‘skills’ is that you can always improve them with proper and consistent training.

Suppose you need to figure out the necessary skills required for toileting. In that case, you should check out this article, where I wrote about the necessary skills your child needs to be independent in toileting

It is important to note that a child diagnosed with a specific developmental condition or has disability issues, depending on the severity of the condition, may require assistance in toileting beyond the age of 6.

If that is the case, I recommend you find a well-trained Pediatric occupational therapist to assist in optimizing your child’s ability in toileting.
