Step-by-step: Teach your child to wash hands properly during toilet training


Ability to wash hands properly after using the toilet is one of the toileting skills your child must learn and practice for hygiene and to create a good toileting habit.

You can teach your child how to wash their hands properly during toilet training to develop good toileting habits.

Here are the proper handwashing steps that you can teach your child during toilet training:

Wet hands with water & apply soap

  • Wet hands with water
  • Apply enough soap to cover all surfaces of the hands

(Step 1): Rub hands palm to palm

Rub hands palm to palm to obtain good quantity of foam.

(Step 2): Rub back of hands with fingers interlaced

Rub right palm over the back of left hand with interlaced fingers.
Then, rub left palm over the back of right hand with interlaced fingers.

(Step 3): Rub palms together with fingers interlaced

Rub palm to palm with fingers interlaced.

(Step 4): Rub back of fingers to opposing palm

Rub the back of fingers to opposing palm with fingers interlocked.
Repeat this action for each hand.

(Step 5): Rub thumb in rotational motion

Rub rotationally left thumb clasped in right palm.
Then, rub rotationally right thumb clasped in left palm.

(Step 6): Rub clasped fingers to opposing palm

Then, rub rotationally backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of left hand in right palm.

Rinse and dry hands

  • Rinse hands thoroughly with running water.
  • Then, dry hands thoroughly with a clean towel or tissue.

How long does proper handwashing takes?

A proper handwashing should takes about 1 minute in total.

To estimate, you can simply count 1 to 10 in each of the steps (step 1 – step 6).

Why is it important to teach your child a proper handwashing steps during toilet training?
