Step-by-step: Teach your child to wash their bottom during toilet training

In some cultures, water is still considered the best purifying agent for cleaning, including bottom washing.

Instead of using toilet paper to clean the bottom, more traditional cultures considered washing it with water as enough.

Regardless of the culture, cleaning oneself after using the toilet is very important and closely related to hygiene.

As a parent, you would want your child to be able to clean themself after using the toilet without relying on your help every time.

Teaching your child to clean themselves after using the toilet is very important because it is an essential skill for them to be independent in toileting.

This article will focus more on how to teach your child how to properly wash their bottom after using the toilet (bottom washing).

Without further due, here are the steps you can follow to teach your child how to wash their bottom cleanly using water during toilet training:

Step 1: Turn on the water supply

  • Turn on the water supply by opening the supply switch (called T-valve). You can find it either at the toilet’s rear or on the wall close by.
  • You can partially open the T-Valve to control the water pressure and avoid unusually high water pressure.

Step 2: Hold the bidet sprayer

  • Hold the bidet sprayer with the right hand in a comfortable manner.

Step 3: Position the bidet sprayer

  • Position the bidet sprayer on the front side.
  • You will need to adjust the angle of your hand so that the nozzle aims downwards toward your bottom.

(Especially for girls, it is recommended to angle the spray from front to back for hygiene and avoid urinary tract infections).

Step 4: Wash the bottom

  • Slowly pull the bidet trigger to release the spray; do not pull too hard. Make sure the water runs at moderate pressure, not high.
  • Wash your bottom using your left hand until it is sufficiently clean while the water runs.
  • Release the bidet trigger to stop the water and place it back in its holder.

How do you teach your child to wash themself properly after using the toilet?

You can teach your child how to wash themself properly after using the toilet by holding their hand to guide them.

Then, you can slowly transition to having them try to do it independently.

It can be done by guiding them for the first few steps and then letting them do the last steps.

Slowly, let them do more and more of the steps until they can do them with less and less assistance from you.

Let your child practice consistently daily until they can do it without your help.
